Understand California Car Insurance Requirements

California is a cause state when it comes to car insurance issues. Simply put, this means that a party in an accident must be assigned the responsibility for the accident. The cause can be partitioned, but that is less common. Regardless, the party that is assigned responsibility for causing the accident is on the hook for the cost of repairs and so is their insurance company.

If you are going to drive in California, you need to have insurance to cover any damage you are found to have caused. There are two sets of insurance coverage you must have under the law of the state. The first is bodily injury liability insurance. The second is property damage liability coverage. Let’s take a closer look.

Bodily Injury Insurance

Under California law, you must maintain $15,000/$30,000 coverage for bodily injury. As the name suggests, this insurance covers any liability assigned to you for bodily injury to another person. If you drive through a stop sign, hit another car and the other driver is hospitalized, your bodily injury policy will cover their bills. The insurance will cover up to $15,000 of the bills for each event, but no more than $30,000 a year regardless of the total number of accidents you cause. (more…)

Hot Wheels Design Challenge

To celebrate Hot Wheels’ 40th anniversary, Mattel did something it’s never done before. It asked outside designers to come up with designs for its miniature toy cars.

Hot Wheels invited major automakers to submit ideas that would be turned into a line of 1/64 scale toy cars. Six car companies sent at least three designs apiece, which were judged by a panel that included Hot Wheels executives and designers as well as editors from the Los Angeles Times, Car and Driver magazine, and Men’s Journal magazine.

Since these weren’t going to be made into real cars, there were few restrictions (wheels don’t need room to steer, for instance, and drivers don’t actually need to see out).

There were a few guidlines, however. The designs had to reflect Hot Wheels’ “Power, performance and speed” credo. The final cars would also have to go around “the loop,” the classic circle of Hot Wheels track. (more…)

Car Insurer Warns of Christmas Break-in Increase

The car insurance industry is being hit by extra customer claims - thanks to a spate of “Grinch-style” thefts.

This is the main finding of new data from car insurance provider the AA. The thefts occur when people go Christmas shopping and leave valuables and new purchases in their vehicle as they move from shop to shop.

Due in part to the “Grinches”, AA Insurance expects break-in claims from drivers to increase by ten percent over December and January - and the firm’s director Simon Douglas said that the rise in claims was already “noticeable” as the festive shopping season gets under way in earnest.

“We’re urging shoppers to be extra vigilant when doing last minute shopping to make sure they are not inviting thieves, for whom the season is about anything but goodwill,” he added. “By taking extra care about how and where you park and not leaving valuable items on display you can greatly reduce the risk of falling prey to Grinch-style thieves who will not hesitate to steal your Christmas.” (more…)

Water Fuel For Cars

In the face of recent rising gas prices, water as fuel for cars is getting a close look as a possible fuel source. In theory, an engine that runs on water wouldn’t really be running on the water itself, but instead extracting the hydrogen gas from the water to be used as fuel. By using certain specialized equipment, the hydrogen can be separated from the oxygen in water and injected into the car’s fuel lines.

There are two systems that are most common for utilizing water fuel for car. The first system, a hybrid type system supplements your vehicle’s gasoline fueled engine with hydrogen gas. The second system relies on hydrogen gas production either on board or off-vehicle.

Hybrid hydrogen gas fueling systems reduce the amount of gasoline your vehicle uses greatly extending your miles per gallon while also reducing your vehicle emissions, as hydrogen is a clean burning, zero emissions fuel. When burned by itself with only oxygen, hydrogen emissions are just water vapor. (more…)

BMW X5 Diesel

It was always going to take a superb vehicle to knock Lexus off its perch in this class - but the BMW X5 is nothing if not superb.

All good things invevitably come to an end, and one of the longest winning streaks in Australia’s Best Cars history ended this year, with the four-time champion Lexus RX 350/330 knocked off its perch by the latest iteration BMW X5 diesel.

It’s an interesting story, because where some winning cars in other categories prospered through good scores in critically weighted (full value points) criteria, the BMW X5 was a fairly solid performer across the board.

Its Lexus nemesis shone in areas like standard features - doubling the Beemer’s score - and also considerably outpointed the X5 in warranty and (unsurprisingly) environment. It also scored better in build/finish, ride and smoothness/quietness - but the big, selfproclaimed ‘Sports Activity Vehicle’ still prevailed over the Lexus hybrid RX400h and its petrol engined sibling.
